Which Fresh Produce Should be Stored in Refrigerator?

When you purchase your groceries for a week, you may wonder how you can store your fruits and vegetables in a way that they do not go wrong. Today, most households have refrigerators, especially since you can get them at highly affordable rates. In fact, you can get an excellent refrigerator under Rs. 30000 in India. But what is the point of owning the appliance if you do not use it correctly for storage?

The climate in which it is cultivated, where it is housed in the supermarket, and the degree of delicacy are all factors that can influence whether a fruit or vegetable should be stored in the refrigerator or the pantry. In some circumstances, health is at stake, but the primary purpose is to keep the food’s texture and flavor.

When you arrive home from shopping, you may wonder if you should keep this fruit or vegetable in the fridge or out. A wrong decision typically has no health effects – though it can sometimes lead to poisoning – but it can change the taste, texture, and look of vegetables. As a result, it’s essential to know how to maintain the most critical foods in one’s daily diet.

It would be ideal to have a rule of thumb for determining which foods should be kept in the refrigerator and kept at room temperature. However, it does not exist. Several indicators can help, such as whether they are more or less delicate, the climate in which they are grown, or how they are stored in the supermarket.

At extremely low temperatures, some fruits and vegetables begin to undergo metabolic changes and structural modifications, resulting in what is known as cold damage. Some of the changes that might be noted include a “cork-like feel,” strange hues, or changes in flavor. These changes do not constitute a microbiological concern, but they cause rejection since they make the items less appealing.

In the supermarket, where are they kept?

The option will often be determined by the time of consumption of a fruit or vegetable. Tomatoes, for example, must be stored outside since they do not ripen correctly inside the refrigerator – especially if they are still green – and develop an unsatisfactory texture and flavor. Once ripe, store them in the fridge to extend their shelf life.

Potatoes and onions will never be found in a refrigerator. However, there are certain exceptions, such as strawberries, which are generally found unrefrigerated in grocery shops but must be refrigerated once you reach home.

Inside the fridge, the ‘delicate’ fruits

Some products have only one option, such as those highly delicate fruits that should be preserved in the refrigerator: red or wild fruits. Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, currants, blackberries, and cherries are sensitive to heat and should be kept refrigerated.

On the other hand, certain veggies are difficult to store in the refrigerator. The most obvious example is potatoes because low temperatures stimulate enzymes that transform the starch they contain into sugar which promotes the formation of harmful chemicals like acrylamide when frying them.

Pineapple that has been sliced because it is too large, the half apple that has been preserved for later, or the banana that has opened slightly when picking another from the bunch should all go straight to the refrigerator.

This is not an exhaustive list of where to store the most common fruits and vegetables. They can be stored in the fridge and the pantry in some situations. Still, the one that best preserves its organoleptic qualities is chosen.

  • Raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, cherries, blackberries, and currants are examples of red fruits.
  • Spinach, Swiss chard, and lettuce are all green leafy veggies.
  • Peppers.
  • Artichoke.
  • Cabbage, red cabbage, and more cabbage
  • Carrot.
  • Plants with eggs.
  • Zucchini.
  • Mushrooms, mushrooms, mushrooms.
  • Fruit and vegetables that have been handled, cut, or peeled are prohibited.

  • Banana
